February favourites

Holy moly how is it March? Despite the extra day, February seemed to go by in a flash. While I’m not quite ready to ditch the opaques just yet, in fact I’m not sure if I am ever ready to ditch them, winter clothes are much more flattering on me than Summer clothes. However, Spring is definitely in the air and I’m looking forward to longer, brighter and hopefully warmer days. Who am I kidding we live in Ireland, longer and brighter is good enough.

February for me was definitely a continuation of winter thinking, wrapping up from the biting wind and rain, oh so much rain, eating comfort food and trying to counteract the effects of central heating on my skin. I live in a house that Jack built, he was having an off day and forgot to insulate the thing, it was the 70’s so I’ll forgive him, but by god it can get cold in there. Hello hot water bottle. Brr.

You are my favourite

I have three favourites for February, one beauty, one food and one for the baby.

Oscar’s fashion for two

When I say fashion for two I don’t mean matchy matchy Justin and Britney circa 2001 American Music Awards, I mean dressing as a mama to be. Dressing while pregnant can be tricky at the best of times, factor in a black tie event and it becomes a minefield. You will want to feel your usual glamorous self, but finding clothes that are your style that flatter your new figure can be very difficult. I can only imagine how difficult it would be preparing for the Oscars. Yes you may have an army of stylists who want to dress you, but I have no doubt even A – listers have days when they would rather dress in over the bumpleggings and a baggy top. I miss those leggings.

The first antibiotics

My memories of being sick as a child involve lying over my mother’s knee while she whacked my back and tried to bring up phlegm. I have a memory of the doctor telling her this was the best way to loosen chest mucus that I wasn’t bringing up myself, not just her way of venting frustration of dealing with a sickly child. In order to stop the back whacking I had to take vile, VILE “banana” flavoured augmentin. Disclaimer, she wasn’t really whacking, more tapping as I coughed, but artistic license and all that.

Fast forward 30 years and my role has changed, I’m now the mum and Little A has been under the weather. A LOT. Thanks to the incredibly mild winter that has meant all manner of bugs haven’t died, he’s picked up colds, coughs, sticky eyes, tummy bugs to name but a few. Until now none of them needed more than some TLC, pain relief and plenty of fluids. Continue reading “The first antibiotics”

Mum on the run

NikeID
My NikeID’s – It’s love

Since Little A has come along, I’ve found myself drawn to shoes that I can run about it, something stylish yet comfortable. We’re not talking nun shoes here, I’m thinking Nike, New Balance and the like! Stylish, comfortable, allowing you to nip to the shops, or go for a mammoth walk in an effort to get baba to sleep or meet other mums for much needed coffee and chat. Thankfully runners are still having something of a fashion moment, so instead of feeling like a retired American tourist in their spanking new white ‘sneakers’ you can feel impossibly stylish – even if you haven’t brushed your hair and the extent of your beauty routine is haphazardly slapping moisturiser on your face. In my book that’s a serious effort.

Baby friendly cinema

We’re in the midst of awards season with the Oscars happening at the end of the month, ooh I can’t wait to see the fashion, the winners, will this year FINALLY be Leonardo DiCaprio‘s year?! Naturally everyone is talking about the nominees, and normally I’d make a trip to see at least a few of them. See what the fuss is ‘n all that! This year, with a little one, cinema trips with Mr WSQ are few and far between. Once you factor in a babysitter it’s suddenly a very expensive evening when you’re not evening going out-out! Even if you aren’t into all the awards season buzz, sometimes it’s raining and you need to get out of the house. Enter baby friendly cinema.

The hospital bag – What to pack

hospital-bag

Let me start this by saying I was convinced, I mean totally and utterly convinced that I was going to go before I due date. I had no real reason for this feeling, what do I mean real, I had NO reason for this feeling but I just had it. So with that in mind I started shopping for my hospital bag list quite far in advance. While I didn’t have it packed(I’m not that type of person, I’ve tried to be but I end up unpacking because I convince myself I’ve forgotten something despite lists, upon lists) I did have it all laid out on the spare bed.

Giant granny panties in a dark colour – check. Really unflattering front opening nighties you’ll never wear again – check. Ridiculously warm dressing gown that causes you to nearly faint from the heat of the hospital – check.

Hello, it’s me.

Hello

The first post. It’s like starting to write the first page of a new notebook. As a stationary obsessive, I’d need a new pen – or at least a good one. Does the ink flow well? Is it the right shade of blue/black/pink? Does it smudge? It does?! Then back to the drawing board you go. Try it out on a scrap piece of paper. Squiggle. Ok it’s working. Now write something.
