Things I wish I had been told

You get bombarded with advice as soon as you so much as look in the direction of a baby, never mind when you start waving around manically your pee stick. Ok was it just me who did that?!Pregnancy announcment

Here’s somethings I wish I had been told.

You will sleep

I will never understand why people need to ram down your throat that sleep will never happen again. You’re pregnant, you have enough anxiety and hormones changes to be dealing with without that flung into the mix every time you step outside your front door. You will sleep. As I said in a previous post, you absolutely will sleep, don’t let the horror stories scare you. The people who tell you these are mean, or lying, or both. It won’t be the long lazy lie in’s of your teenage years, more like an hour or two max at a time. You’ll learn to catch a quick cat nap and survive on less sleep than ever imaginable. And it will be worth it. Most of the time! For the other times there’s chocolate.

Baby bits and bobs I couldn’t live without

Wishfulstylequeen and Little A
Baby sling in action!

In my circle of friends we’re in the middle of a baby boom. Within the space of a couple of years, we’ve gone from a group of girls, still thinking we’re in our early twenties to a group of mums with enough little ones to start up our own childcare facility(not a bad idea!)

This group provided me with invaluable knowledge on what to get in preparation for the arrival of Little A. Sometimes the recommendations were overwhelming, how are there so many different brands of breast pump? What do you mean rent one?! But one piece of advice came from everyone. Less is more. You don’t need EVERYTHING in Mothercare before the baby arrives, and if you find you really need that baby swingy rocker thing, you can buy it and get it delivered straight to your door.

One year on here is my list of things I could not live without.

Things NEVER to say to a pregnant woman

Someecards pregnancy

It’s hard to believe that Little A turned one at the weekend. Making it a whole year since I was pregnant. It got me thinking of all the crazy things people say to you while you are ‘with child’ and I made a mental note, never, ever in a month of Sundays to even think them around a pregnant woman.

Here are some of my absolute favourites, in fact while some incite rage as I write them  some make me full on LOL!

The great breastfeeding debate. My two cents.

I’ve thought about this post for a long time, every time I hear or read another piece about breastfeeding and the stigma surrounding it. I have to say I guffaw when I hear that. The real stigma these days is the Mummy shaming around bottle feeding. When Jamie Oliver proclaimed that’s it’s ‘easier for Mums to breastfeed’ it was obvious he hadn’t been to my house! I applaud Adele coming out in the defense of mother’s like me who do not need more shaming when you are already feeling very vulnerable. We want to do the best for our babies. End of.

Not enough storage

Not enough storage

My phone has been having a nervous breakdown over the past few days, despite purchasing extra iCloud storage – which I now believe to be a load of cobblers, I manage to see the ‘not enough storage’ warning at least once a day. I edit things down, I have all my photos up in the cloud, but yet, for some reason I still don’t have enough storage.

It was on one of those ‘editing’ missions that I came across this photo, me in my absolute favourite item of clothing that I bought while pregnant. Continue reading “Not enough storage”

Oscar’s fashion for two

When I say fashion for two I don’t mean matchy matchy Justin and Britney circa 2001 American Music Awards, I mean dressing as a mama to be. Dressing while pregnant can be tricky at the best of times, factor in a black tie event and it becomes a minefield. You will want to feel your usual glamorous self, but finding clothes that are your style that flatter your new figure can be very difficult. I can only imagine how difficult it would be preparing for the Oscars. Yes you may have an army of stylists who want to dress you, but I have no doubt even A – listers have days when they would rather dress in over the bumpleggings and a baggy top. I miss those leggings.

Mum on the run

NikeID
My NikeID’s – It’s love

Since Little A has come along, I’ve found myself drawn to shoes that I can run about it, something stylish yet comfortable. We’re not talking nun shoes here, I’m thinking Nike, New Balance and the like! Stylish, comfortable, allowing you to nip to the shops, or go for a mammoth walk in an effort to get baba to sleep or meet other mums for much needed coffee and chat. Thankfully runners are still having something of a fashion moment, so instead of feeling like a retired American tourist in their spanking new white ‘sneakers’ you can feel impossibly stylish – even if you haven’t brushed your hair and the extent of your beauty routine is haphazardly slapping moisturiser on your face. In my book that’s a serious effort.

Pancake Tuesday

It’s one of my favourite days, there’s no denying it. Despite this fact, I’m never prepared and it always creeps up on me. Wasn’t it Christmas just last week? Time really does seem to speed up the older you get.

My mum is the best pancake maker in the world. Bar none. She has no official title, nor has she taken part in any competitions. She doesn’t need to, the other opponents would only feel humiliated by her pancake making prowess. She keeps it simple, old school if you will, the memorised Delia Smith recipe is called into play, doubled or tripled depending on who’ll be there – or how hungry we are.

The hospital bag – What to pack

hospital-bag

Let me start this by saying I was convinced, I mean totally and utterly convinced that I was going to go before I due date. I had no real reason for this feeling, what do I mean real, I had NO reason for this feeling but I just had it. So with that in mind I started shopping for my hospital bag list quite far in advance. While I didn’t have it packed(I’m not that type of person, I’ve tried to be but I end up unpacking because I convince myself I’ve forgotten something despite lists, upon lists) I did have it all laid out on the spare bed.

Giant granny panties in a dark colour – check. Really unflattering front opening nighties you’ll never wear again – check. Ridiculously warm dressing gown that causes you to nearly faint from the heat of the hospital – check.
